Sold for Fifty Million: What a Tyrannosaur Auction Costs Science


 The paddles rose like a held breath. Inside Sotheby's saleroom on July 14, bidders leaned forward as the number climbed past thirty million, then forty, the room's usual murmur thinning into silence. On the screen behind auctioneer Phyllis Kao, a T. rex skull loomed over the crowd — jaws parted, teeth catching the light. "Try a bigger bite," Kao said, coaxing one more raise. "It's a T. rex after all." Somewhere past forty-three million the gavel finally fell, and the room exhaled into applause for an animal that has been extinct for sixty-six million years. The line got its laugh because everyone in the room understood the joke was sitting directly on top of an extinction event — funnier, maybe, than it was comfortable

Fifty million dollars, fees included, does not just buy eleven tons of reconstructed bone. It buys a claim on rarity — a skeleton whole enough and famous enough to function less like a museum specimen than a trophy. Gus is being sold as much as an idea of dominance as an object: the largest predator most people can name, mounted mid-stride, priced like a masterpiece. The number itself becomes part of the story, another data point in a market that increasingly treats deep time as a luxury good.

The bones came out of South Dakota's Hell Creek Formation, the same red-and-gray badlands that have yielded some of paleontology's most famous rexes. The specimen takes its nickname from Gary "Gus" Licking, the rancher on whose land it surfaced — a name now attached to a predator far older than any ranch. Excavator Thomas Heitkamp and his team at Theropoda Expeditions spent from 2021 to 2023 freeing it from rock, piece by piece, until roughly sixty-one percent of the skeleton, by bone volume, stood ready for a twelve-foot-high, thirty-eight-foot mount.


Six years ago, a T. rex named Stan sold for $31.8 million and the figure seemed unrepeatable. Then a juvenile Ceratosaurus brought $30.5 million last year, and a Stegosaurus nicknamed Apex reached $44.6 million the year before that. Each sale reset expectations upward, training buyers and houses alike to treat dinosaur bones as an asset class with its own momentum. Gus, at $50 million, does not just join that list — it becomes the new ceiling, at least for now.


Not everyone in the room was celebrating. Stuart Sumida, president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, has watched this pattern before and named the cost plainly: "If you sell something, it's generally lost to science." Once a specimen this significant disappears into private ownership, the researchers who might have studied its growth rings, its healed injuries, its place in the Cretaceous ecosystem often lose access entirely — and journals tend not to publish work built on bones no one else can check.


Sumida's warning is real, but it isn't the whole picture, and Stan is the reason why. That $31.8 million sale six years ago is widely reported to have ended with the skeleton acquired for the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, which opened in November 2025, where it has since gone on public display rather than into a private hallway. A specimen can leave the auction floor and still end up lit behind glass on the other side of the world — private sale does not automatically mean vanishing.


But a display case answers only one question, whether the public can look at a T. rex; it says nothing about whether a paleontologist can pull a CT scan, section a bone, or publish a growth study with data another lab is free to check. Sumida's loss is a research loss specifically, and a museum abroad can withhold that kind of access just as completely as a private collector — sometimes on terms nobody outside the deal ever sees. Stan doesn't refute the warning. He just proves it's not automatic in either direction.

Here is the quieter fact behind the applause: neither buyer nor seller has been named. Gus will not vanish — the skeleton is real, assembled, twelve feet of it standing somewhere. But an unnamed owner can also mean an unreachable one, a specimen that continues to exist physically while stepping outside the record science depends on.


For now, Gus stands mid-stride in a saleroom's memory, jaws open, price tag settled, address unknown — eleven tons of bone that took two field seasons to free from rock and about ninety seconds to sell past forty-three million dollars.
